William Bowes is General Counsel and Company Secretary at Cambridge University Press, a position he has held since 2011. In addition to his work for Cambridge University Press, William’s role also involves assisting other departments and Colleges within the University of Cambridge community on a range of IP, Brand and Policy issues.
William has a particular speciality in copyright and how the boundaries between the public and private domain are drawn and policed in the world of digital learning and research. He is active in the wider publishing industry and is the current chair of the international board of the UK publishers Association in which capacity he helps to shape the industry's approach to interaction with politicians and governments around the world. He is a regular speaker on intellectual property issues, with recent talks in New Delhi, Frankfurt, Oxford and London.
Prior to joining Cambridge, William qualified as a solicitor with Wragge & Co IP Team in London. He has subsequently worked with and for some of the UK’s largest brands including O2, Penguin Books and Cambridge and in 2015 was listed in The Lawyer’s Top 100.
