Ulrich von Koppenfels is a legal officer and head of sector at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy. He leads the legal team within the unit for energy policy coordination, which is responsible for advice on all legal matters regarding policy initiatives and enforcement of EU law in the field of energy (including infringement procedures). Previously, he worked at the Commission's Directorate General for Competition in the coordination of cases and policy initiatives and as a case handler in the fields of merger control and antitrust enforcement. Before joining the European Commission, Ulrich von Koppenfels started his professional career at the German Bundeskartellamt (national competition authority). Ulrich von Koppenfels studied law at the Universities of Bonn, Geneva and Freiburg and earned a post-graduate degree at the College of Europe in Bruges. He is the author of several book chapters and journal articles on competition law and energy policy.
